ABSTRACT

In this chapter, planning teaching is discussed, and multiple examples are provided to illustrate planning of teaching in which variation theory has been used in different subject areas. Examples are given from the teaching of history, English grammar, reading comprehension skills, natural science, and physical education. A central idea is that we need to decide on the object of learning and investigate students' pre-knowledge in the subject area before we can plan teaching activities. Examples of critical aspects identified in different learning studies are shown. At the end of the chapter, systematic use of variation in tasks and task sequences in mathematics are shown.
