ABSTRACT
This introductory chapter examines the distinctive nature of urban commons considering what sets them apart from other forms of urban green space. It emphasises the fact that the character of individual urban commons is distinctive, grounded in their own location and determined by their legal status and history, and it emphasises the importance of understanding their past and present identity and usage as a basis for future imaginings of them as shared and valued community space.
