ABSTRACT
This chapter sets out the motivation for the book, which is to introduce translation to people who do not (or do not intend to) work as professional translators, but who nonetheless encounter translation in one form or another as part of their everyday lives. By increasing their awareness about what’s involved in translation, people can be empowered to make more informed decisions about working with translated text, translation tools, or even language professionals. This chapter also provides a general overview of the contents of the rest of the book. The chapter ends with some discussion points and suggestions for further reading.
