ABSTRACT
This chapter investigates the world of interpreting, considering a range of different types (e.g., consecutive, dialogue, and simultaneous interpreting) as well as a variety of settings where interpreting can take place (e.g., business meetings, law courts, hospitals, conferences). Sign language interpreting and non-professional interpreting are also introduced. Various challenges that interpreters face are described. The chapter ends with some discussion points, practical exercises, and suggestions for further reading.
