ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the overall field of translation and explains some fundamental concepts and terms that are used in the field of translation (e.g., source, target, equivalence, and literal and free translation). In addition, the chapter introduces and dispels a number of commonly held myths, such as the misperception that translation and interpreting are the same, that all bilingual people make good translators, that translation is impossible, or that computers will soon replace translators altogether. The chapter ends with some discussion points, practical exercises, and suggestions for further reading.
