ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces 17 key people, artefacts, and events from all over the world that have played an important role in the history of the field of translation from before the Common Era to the present day. Some of the people and events that have helped to shape our multilingual society include the Rosetta Stone, St. Jerome, Xuanzang, the House of Wisdom, the Navajo code talkers, the Nuremberg trials, and Weaver’s memorandum. The chapter ends with some discussion points, practical exercises, and suggestions for further reading.
