ABSTRACT
This chapter lifts the veil on what it’s like to work as a professional translator, with the goal of helping those outside the profession to gain a deeper appreciation of what’s involved and what constraints may arise that affect the translation process and resulting products. Some of the material covered includes different types of employment conditions (e.g., in-house, agency, or freelance translators), the impact of technology on the profession, the role of professional associations, and the type of training needed to become a professional translator. The chapter ends with some discussion points, practical exercises, and suggestions for further reading.
