ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the differences between language for general purposes and language for special purposes and, in so doing, introduces the fields of lexicography and terminology. In addition to presenting the professions of lexicographer and terminologist, the chapter explores the products created by these two professions, namely dictionaries and term banks, and explains how these can support translation. This chapter also briefly introduces the notion of language planning and its connection to translation. The chapter ends with some discussion points, practical exercises, and suggestions for further reading.
