ABSTRACT

Ethics, as an old discipline, is rooted in Antiquity. Nevertheless, ethical problems, dilemmas, and unpleasant experiences arise in real-life settings today. There seems to be a renewed and increased emphasis on ethics during the last century due to technological development, the professionalization of working life, and globalization. As ethics links to multiple discourses and cultural dissimilarities in various parts of the world, it is necessary to differentiate between the law (legislation) and moral norms and values and where they overlap in the different countries. Also, music is defined, interpreted, and understood in various ways. What music is and means in different contexts depends on wording, theoretical and philosophical foundation, and level of reflexivity. Music and ethics are then present as lived experiences in context.
