ABSTRACT
Cities across the world are expanding and redeveloping vacant, abandoned, industrialized or underinvested areas, a process generating patterns of uneven development that create new or reinforce existing urban socioeconomic and environmental inequalities. This chapter unpacks recent urban growth trajectories through forms including sprawl, expansion and densification and examines the inequities they produce as cities revitalize. We also uncover drivers of urban injustice in the context of sustainability interventions that include intensification and regeneration and policy tools that can counteract injustices driven by urban expansion and regeneration projects and underline the role that grassroots struggle can play not only in achieving more just and sustainable urban environments but also in influencing future regeneration strategies.
