ABSTRACT

In this final chapter, the original research question and hypotheses from Chapter 1 are brought into a dialogue with the data presented in Chapter 3 and the studies that were discussed in Chapters 2 and 4, respectively. The goal here is to better understand what the data might mean. In response to the hypotheses, and based on the experimental data and the theories presented, the claim is made that all examples are essentially to be located in the second hypothesis, namely, that language does not instruct how to see in one’s mind. In short, rather than being categorical, the drawing examples in the study appear to reside on a continuum, ranging from relatively predicable to the extremely idiosyncratic. The chapter closes by discussing possible implications of the research and setting out proposals for modifications that might be made in future research.
