ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the impact of gentrification on older people ageing in place in neighbourhoods experiencing rapid demographic and socioeconomic change. The chapter provides an explanation of the nature of gentrification and reviews key contributions to the research literature. Gentrification is then examined through an ageing lens, highlighting its impact on different generational groups. The concept of “erasure” is used to explain why older people have been neglected in gentrification studies. The research literature on experiences of ageing in place in gentrifying neighbourhoods is reviewed, with a focus on issues of belonging and place attachment on the one hand, and exclusionary pressures on the other. Consideration is given to the implications of developing age-friendly communities in neighbourhoods undergoing the social changes associated with gentrification.
