ABSTRACT

Children and adults in kinship care live their family lives in the intersection between the private and the public sphere. Here, the involvement and management of the state in everyday private life is much greater than what is the norm in other families in society. In this chapter we will use various theoretical perspectives to illustrate the contradictory logic of these two fields and show how kinship care is experienced by different families. Most of our examples are from the perspective of the foster parents, which here refers to grandparents, aunts and uncles. We will also shine a light on some of the opportunities and limitations both for children and for adults in the context of kinship care, and discuss how being a foster home affects their family lives.
