ABSTRACT
This chapter entails a brief historical review of how the Swedish state's relationship to homosexuality has changed over time, with an emphasis on exclusion and inclusion. It also reviews research on the relationship between gay sexuality and police organizations. The review concludes that while there is a tendency toward inclusion both at the formal and informal organizational levels, gay officers still tend to experience greater difficulties than their heterosexual counterparts and there is quite a long way to go before full inclusion is reached. The review also shows that studies on the role of sexual orientation in the Swedish police are in short supply, particularly when it comes to those based on LGBTQ+ officers’ own experiences from their working lives.
