ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the interplay between exclusion and inclusion. Like Chapter 3, this chapter is based on interviews with gay and bisexual police officers. New concepts are introduced here. The interplay between exclusion and inclusion is understood as a collective process characterized by a struggle between attempts at silencing and attempts at making one's voice heard. The relationship between silencing and voice is thus key. The concept of heteronormativity is also introduced; that is, the assumption that heterosexuality is the normal and preferred sexuality. It is shown in this chapter that heteronormativity can be reproduced in processes of inclusion, not only by heterosexuals but also by homosexuals. The personal stories in this chapter are called “Cancer”, “The poster”, “The sauna”, “The convertor”, “The support”, “Hype”, and “No problems”.
