ABSTRACT
This final chapter is a summary and development of what was discussed in the foregoing chapters. The conceptual apparatus that was used in those chapters is brought back to identify a number of key findings around how the exclusion and inclusion of LGB sexuality in Swedish police work and which obstacles to inclusion have been identified. An overarching concept is also introduced here, namely peripheral inclusion; this is a way of understanding both the process described – the “struggle” between inclusion and exclusion can be understood as peripheral inclusion – and the result of the process – peripheral inclusion is a position that denotes inclusion in an organization without achieving full membership. In light of this conceptual apparatus, the chapter broadens the perspective to discuss how the book's insights around the exclusion and inclusion of LGB sexuality in the Swedish police relate to time and also what implications they have for other occupations that, like policing, can be seen as being “masculinized”. The role of masculinity is discussed at a more general level and the discussion is brought back to the relationship between policing and democracy. Finally, the chapter turns to practitioners – such as police management, police officers, and HR officers – and outlines insights from the book that could be useful for them.
