ABSTRACT

The chapter presents a summary of data from the literature and clinical practice on the basic psychosocial factors which are important from the perspective of carrying out a psychological diagnosis of body image distortions among patients suffering from various types of eating disorders. Specifying the role of particular psychological and social (as well as sociocultural) factors in shaping body image and various related behaviors is significant from the point of view of treatment planning with eating disorder patients. From the outset of the treatment process, the directions and goals of psychological support should be adjusted to fit the patient's current health and psychophysical capabilities. The significance of psychological diagnosis for establishing the directions of psychotherapy for chronically ill psychosomatic patients requires constant development through studies, which would facilitate offering the patients constructive support.
