ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to examine the function and significance of new media in minority- and endangered-language communities. New media refers here to ubiquitous digital tools, apps, and platforms, such as YouTube, internet forums, Twitter, Facebook, QQ, memes, podcasts, and video games. Synthesising and complementing previous studies, our chapter provides an overview of types of new media used in minority- and endangered-languages settings and offers more detailed recent case studies for each type of media. The case studies include Irish, North and South Sámi, Maya, Inuktitut, Uyghur, Yiddish, Welsh, Wa, Basque, Guernésiais, Māori, Meänkieli, Breton, and Scottish Gaelic.
