ABSTRACT
In Chapter 7, the authors conclude by assessing the interpretive framework for understanding the depiction of societal responses to epidemic disease outbreaks in cinematic history in line with what has been seen across the world at large from the emergence and spread of COVID-19. The chapter highlights, in particular, the recurring prevalence of societal resistance to elites and authorities, Orientalized narratives, and the representation of women according to predefined tropes, while asserting some differences, including the concept of the “ordinary hero“.
