ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the main theoretical concepts underlying the research, considering the role and experiences of second- and third-generation immigrants in larger migration research internationally, and specifically as it applies to Italians living in other parts of the world. The concept of italianità, which is central to the discussion, is explored in relation to the relevant literature. The theoretical lenses used to understand the experiences of original immigrants and their descendants, such as acculturation and transnationalism, are explained. The concept of a “return” to the country of origin, which played a significant role in the participants’ experiences, is described especially in terms of its relationship with the concept of a “diaspora”, which can be understood from different theoretical perspectives.
