Introduction

This chapter discusses the spread of populism as a political and academic buzzword of the 21st century. It introduces contemporary examples of political populism especially from Europe and the Americas and describes the history of populism studies from the 1950s until the 2020s. The two main lines in academic populism research, the politological and cultural, are defined, followed by the introduction of the book structure.
