ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses populism in regard to different forms and conceptualisations of democracy. Special attention is paid to concepts of representative and liberal democracy that are the forms of democracy against which contemporary populism is often mirrored. The ambivalent role of populism as part of radical democracy theory and the ideal of deliberative democracy is also debated. Finally, the concrete influences of populism as a corrective or a threat to various democratic contexts are examined.
