ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the multifaceted relationship between populism and media in its various forms. The idea of mediatisation of politics has been promoted simultaneously with the increased success of the populist movements, indicating the inherent relationship between them. Commercial logic of the news media and journalistic watch-dog criteria have indicated to support media populism and to go hand-in-hand with the lifespan of the populist movements. However, social media in particular has turned to a political communication hybrid and challenged the relationship between politics and journalistic media. Therefore, social media have been exploited as a means of populist political communication, but their use and effects vary depending on the contexts.
