ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a brief outline of the history of financial communication and investor relations. Starting from the emergence of the financial communication function in the US, particular attention is paid to how financial communication and investor relations have evolved in Europe over time, how the US has influenced international practice – and how Europe has more recently become an independent and highly professionalized investor relations hub. The chapter also offers an overview of the research field of financial communication and investor relations and presents insights from an original bibliographical analysis. Findings confirm the interdisciplinary nature of the research field, its recent expansion, and a notable focus on US practices.
