ABSTRACT
With the increased collection of data on prison incidents, it is now possible to provide analyses of violence that complements existing practice knowledge and can inform management strategies. This chapter illustrates how this might occur by applying methods for assessing the relationship between the prison environment and violence. Machine learning methods are used to understand the many factors that can potentially contribute to prison violence, drawing on 10 years of New Zealand prison violent incidents and prisoner population data.
