ABSTRACT

This chapter primarily describes the global changes that led to the emergence of G-SIBs and the shift from traditional banking to this conglomerate-like model. Then G-SIBs are presented first from a historical angle, and later from the present perspective. Both viewpoints provide a similar result – the institutions are inherently different and should not be perceived as a uniform group. Problems with business model classifications only confirm this point. Similarly, this G-SIB diversity is noticeable in the analysis of challenges (or opportunities) that are or soon will be facing these entities, such as competition from Big Tech, requirements to become greener, and many long-lasting pandemic-related troubles.
