ABSTRACT
The chapter defines what spirits are and how they differ from God/gods. It provides criteria to distinguish spirits and notes some of their limitations. It provides examples of spirit-beliefs from the major world religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism) and some smaller traditions (Vodou, Shinto and African indigenous religions).
