ABSTRACT

This chapter presents findings related to political grievances found in the research sample. Across the narratives, many political grievances come to the fore. Some of them relate to global affairs, such as frustrations with the role of Western powers in the region, especially the military invasion of Iraq in 2003, and a perception of the international community as being biased towards Western powers and remaining idle when major injustices are committed. Others refer to local aspects such as the corruption of the state and state violence, differential criminalisation and feeling neglected and politically marginalised. Links between political grievances and mobilisation are discussed.
