ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 demonstrated how a situation of injustice, abuse or neglect needs to be identified for an engagement process to start in the first place. Another important component of engagement is appropriation: How do the interviewees make a certain cause relevant to their own lives? How do they identify themselves with it? How do they make the cause their cause? This chapter discusses the role of collective identity, the figure of the rebellious underdog and feelings of guilt and solidarity that were found to be crucial aspects when it comes to individuals’ process of owning an injustice and making it relevant for themselves on a personal level.
