ABSTRACT

Based on the narratives of those interviewees who engaged in physical violence, this chapter explores the logics of violence, i.e., the different ways in which armed and lethal violence is made sense of by the interviewees. Through a Grounded Theory approach, a series of ideological constructs are identified that accompany descriptions of the recourse to extreme violence, sometimes against unarmed civilians. These ideological constructs include violence as a necessary evil; violence as self-defence; strategic violence; violence as revenge; violence as emotional liberation; and violence as teaching a lesson.
