ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a brief overview of the current state of the research on politico-ideological violence and argues that the field of so-called terrorism studies is hampered by three main analytical shortfalls, namely orientalism, state-centrism and a tendency to depoliticise its object of study. As a major consequence of these characteristics, grievances have become sidelined in the study of PIV. The chapter elaborates on the potential advantages of (re)-centring analysis around grievances for research and policymaking.
