ABSTRACT

This chapter builds on the insights and analyses of the previous chapters while discussing how multi-actor and participatory approaches may stimulate and enhance sustainable urban development in the European Arctic under and beyond the given legislation. This chapter thus critically reviews institutional and informal practices as well as reconsiders theoretical premises to point out potentials for strengthening transnational cooperation and participation in the context of urban development in the European Arctic. This chapter culminates in the outline of three pathways—Pathway 1 “Nordic Model 2.0 for more local agency”, Pathway 2 “Towards more inclusive and active multi-actor platforms at the transnational level”, and Pathway 3 “Strengthening the nexus of regional cooperation and the design of global agreements”—towards enhanced sustainable development in the region and beyond.
