ABSTRACT

This chapter explores routine MP functions including ritualised constituency visits taking place two times every year. It also describes the motions that MPs go through when dealing with the many constituency ‘questions’ collected for the rest of the year through regular house assemblies and standing committee meetings. These procedures, as in many other parliaments, are bound by rules and procedures that are ritualised, yet each is unique in its own way, as each MP personalises commonalities. And the way they are perceived by the constituency could be a symbol of consistency, strength, simple boredom or even control. The chapter uses three indicators to explore the impact of MP constituency visits; these are the constituency’s awareness of MPs visits, the constituency’s ability to name their MPs and attempts by members of the constituency to contact the MP.
