ABSTRACT

Chapter 18 discusses the role of design thinking and abstraction as an additional way of understanding established neighbourhoods, where it can be difficult to see beyond the prevailing character of the single home on its own lot. Two design exercises, ‘Grid Block’ and ‘The Block Apartment’, graphically demonstrate how a deconstruction of the suburbs and a collaging of urban housing case studies into an established neighbourhood block can enable the familiar to be seen with new eyes.
