ABSTRACT

This chapter continues the discussion of character by presenting examples of ‘commonly accepted anomalies’: examples of suburban alterations and additions quirks which, once understood, can be leveraged to create additional housing rather than simply bigger housing. These are further expanded into ‘suburban operations’ – a simple suite of diagrammed possibilities for adding to existing suburban homes on a single or double lot. This establishes the setting for the bluefield housing model discussed in Part 2, and for the design studies of Part 3. The chapter concludes with the proposition that a shift is required from ‘not in my backyard’ thinking to an attitude of accepting ‘quality in my backyard’.
