ABSTRACT

Find the right role models to inspire your own social change actions. Nonprofit Artistic Circles created a series of theatrical, musical, and educational and interactive projects about women leaders from Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair for the Fair’s 100-year anniversary celebration. The women leaders included suffragist Susan B. Anthony, race activist Ida B. Wells, and women’s rights activist Fannie Barrier Williams. Our first projects resulted in a Grammy-nominated CD and award-winning national radio program and book, as well as a town hall meeting and public discussions. The case study examines mentorship and race and how systemic bias plays out in the classroom and in corporations. Questions and actions focus on social and organizational systems, strategies for advancement despite racial and national bias, and how to choose mentors and become leaders and mentors yourself.
