ABSTRACT
We developed innovative programs that showcased composers and artists from different races, nationalities, and gender identities. The result was Noteworthy Women, Public Radio’s first national radio series about women and music. These hour-long radio programs featured point/counterpoint discussions among musicians, composers, and scholars from the US, China, Mexico, Azerbaijan, and Russia. The series also explored how gender identity impacts musical opportunities, especially for a Trans composer. The case study highlights the experiences of a 20-year-old gay film major at a well-known university. Chitra, an immigrant from southern India, wanted to portray her gay community of trust in her films. She filmed in her home country, where she faced disapproval from her extended family and from her culture. Her future challenge is identifying funding and support from companies that don’t exploit workers or discriminate in the workplace.
