ABSTRACT
This chapter compares and contrasts concepts of patriotism, nationalism, and national collective narcissism. Although collective narcissism may refer to any social identity, studies that examined collective narcissism with reference to the nation advance our understanding of the relationship between patriotism and nationalism. Patriotism, nationalism, and national collective narcissism all stem from national identification. While national collective narcissism overlaps with patriotism and nationalism, patriotism has little in common with nationalism. When the common variance of national narcissism and patriotism is partialed out, the relationship between patriotism and nationalism is negative. This means not only that nationalism does not comprise patriotism. Instead, genuine patriotism is incompatible with and precludes nationalism.
