ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the ample evidence pointing to the alignment of the associations between national collective narcissism and advantaged groups’ collective narcissism (White, male, heterosexual) with prejudice toward disadvantaged groups (racial minorities, women, sexual minorities). Prejudice is biased, emotionally laden belief that justifies discrimination and inequality. Collective narcissism predicts double standards in judging what actions represent discrimination based on whether they are performed by the ingroup or the outgroup member. The robust association between collective narcissism and prejudice may represent a specific expression of the more general association between collective narcissism and negative emotionality. The association between collective narcissism and prejudice is typically (but not always) suppressed by ingroup satisfaction, robustly associated with positive and prosocial emotionality. Moreover, the association between collective narcissism and various forms of prejudice is reduced by mindfulness practice that trains the ability to experience positive, prosocial emotions.
