ABSTRACT
The Dominican community of Klingental provides another example for particularly able economic management. And because of a wealth of sources, we can get detailed insights. The nuns of Klingental settled in the fast-growing town of Klein-Basel in the late thirteenth century. There, the nuns quickly revealed themselves as knowledgeable investors. During the fourteenth century, they acquired clusters of arable lands near Basel, which brought them great amounts of annual revenues in grain and wine. Divided into two parts, this chapter first outlines Klingental’s institutional history and then discusses Klingental’s gradual rise to become one of the region’s most influential landowners.
