ABSTRACT

Working life cannot be separated from the socio-spatial constructs where it unfolds. This chapter aims to review the literature on the gendered nature of informal work by contextualizing it within agglomeration imageries. The intent is to critically read various studies on Sri Lankan agglomerations, e.g., from the construction of an ideal village to modern metropolis imagery, to primarily discuss the gendered nature of informal work. The main argument of this chapter is that the changing nature of informal (urban) work cannot be read in isolation but is situated within the development of masculine agglomeration imageries in Sri Lanka.
