ABSTRACT

This part dives into the contexts and theories that underpin my conception of a modern, transcultural and (dis)enchanted cosmos, shedding light on key ideas in cosmological thought, situating the term historically, and in the present context of the Anthropocene. The part introduction gives an overview of the Anthropocene concept. I show that the Anthropocene is a useful term because of—not despite—the lack of consensus: not because the official scientific bodies, such as the Anthropocene Working Group (AWG), are deciding on a definitive version of history, but because this crisis challenges humanists, scientists, artists and civil society to work together. Although cosmos is related to the Anthropocene, it still presents an overcoming of it.
