ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 defines suffering and discusses the multiple ways it manifests itself in our lives. The distinction is made between unintentional suffering, that which happens beyond our control, and intentional suffering, that which happens as a direct result of our deliberate actions. Examples of both types of suffering are presented, with a focus on how compassion can prevent and reduce suffering. This starts with paying attention to suffering, meaning recognizing suffering in its multiple forms. Once recognized, an emotional response to suffering can then motivate action. However, prior to acting, a decision must be made about whether a compassionate action is possible, deserved, or even desirable. The chapter closes by bringing the discussion home to each of us. Whatever suffering occurs in the world around us, recognizing and responding to it starts with us. Only then can compassionate concern be extended to others.
