ABSTRACT
Chapter 5 proceeds to the case study itself. It begins with a short description of the study setup and the qualitative analysis methods used. It then provides a short overview of all pairs’ performance on the paper-folding task, before diving into a detailed account of a single case selected for in-depth analysis. It reports and carefully recounts this single pair’s progress of engaging with the paper-folding task over the course of three days. Referring to protocol excerpts, sketches, illustrations of gestures etc., it follows the development of this pair’s understanding of the task domain, and the representational changes they went through – including the eventual occurrence of an overarching, idiosyncratic metaphor forming the basis of their approach. Beyond providing the basis for the theoretical thoughts presented in the next chapter, this report is also supposed to provide the reader with fertile ground and inspiration for theoretical speculation and development of their own.
