ABSTRACT

Political choices we make determine our health as a society. Our bodies are composed of cells and organs but the best health advice for our component is not the best advice for an individual. Similarly the best health advice for an individual is not the best advice for a country or population. Treat the country, that is focus on the sick population, and the components, ourselves, and our cells and organs will be healthy as a byproduct. Yet our focus is on sick individuals. Treating them does not make a healthy population. A caring and sharing culture, typified by low inequality, leads to a healthy society. The neoliberal transformation that resulted by letting the rich take as much as they can so they will invest it and improve our lives from the jobs they create is a farce. Required political strategies are detailed. Besides creating awareness and agreeing on a course of action, a transforming political event is required to change policies in America. We need to boost effective public spending by returning to the tax levels we had during the Great Depression.
