ABSTRACT

This final chapter is not a conclusion, but a reflection on the various issues raised in previous chapters. It weaves together the main ideas of the book, tracing how sand and dunes can fill the gaps in some major issues of world history, establishing improbable connections between different subjects, easily slipping between what is considered regular or standard, showing how blurred normality often is. It proposes that to think like a dune is to move as one, that to back away from the rising waters should not be considered defeat, but a basic strategy. This chapter suggests the need to look for dissenting voices within past experience in order to find solutions to common concerns, foster care and belonging, and create resilient and empowered coastal communities.
