ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the definitions and scope of the present study. It also describes the range of providers of fee-charging private tutoring, and common modes of provision. Further, the chapter outlines geographic and cultural variations of private tutoring around the world, since it has been documented in various countries at least since the 19th century. The positive and negative features of private tutoring are also illustrated.
