ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an analysis of the real-life story of one of the activists from the Myanmar pro-democracy campaign. The analysis shows how one individual’s life, within a context of living under a military junta since birth, experiences the repressive power and how from early childhood onwards, events prepare and develop her readiness to join the campaign movement. The analysis shows that much before the 1988 and 2007 campaigns began, the activist had already started gaining important experiences from various family, friends, and other citizens of Myanmar on what all could happen in a military dictatorship. The campaign itself has strengthened the activist’s empowerment, the identification with democratic norms and values, and struggles for unity and a regime change towards democracy.
