ABSTRACT

The analysis of the Palestinian resistance history, which has formed the resistance legacy for Palestinian people of today, begins with the arrival of the first Zionist settlers in Palestine at the end of the 19th century. The analysis shows how resistance against Zionist attempts to take control over lands in Palestine began with various civil resistance campaigns. From the end of the 1950s however, it transformed into armed resistance, which then became the dominant form of resistance by Palestinian organisations. Towards the end of the 1980s, and with the Palestinian Intifada against the Israeli occupation, civil resistance once again became the dominant form of resistance. Although the Second Intifada at the beginning of the 21st century entailed a great deal of armed resistance practices, contemporary armed resistance is less practiced than civil resistance. Since the end of the Second Intifada, and except for the direct armed confrontations between Hamas and Israel, civil resistance has been the dominant practice applied by Palestinians in their struggle for independence and democracy.
