ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the role of pre-production in metal music production. Despite the advancements in digital tools and the possibilities afforded by unconventional mixing techniques, the success of a metal production ultimately hinges on convincing performances and well-arranged songs. The foundation of a ‘heavy’ metal production is invariably established during meticulous pre-production. This process typically encompasses refining songs, enhancing performances, preparing for recording by finalizing arrangements, selecting instrumentation and tones, determining appropriate recording methods, and creating a tempo map with a corresponding click track. Effective pre-production ensures that the artist approaches the recording process with fully developed arrangements and performances, allowing the producer to execute the project with a clear aesthetic vision across the recording, editing, and mixing stages. Building on these foundational principles, this chapter outlines the overarching vision for the project song ‘In Solitude’, introduces its composition and arrangement, and details the key pre-production steps undertaken to realize its full potential.
